Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge (1 Marshlands Rd, Fremont, CA 94555) is the first urban national wildlife refuge in the United States and one of the most significant stopover points on the Pacific Flyway. The refuge covers 30,000 acres of open bay, salt marsh, and upland habitat along the bay's southern edge, accessible from Union City via Jarvis Avenue and Marshlands Road just off Highway 84. The visitor center and trailheads accommodate bus groups, with a large parking area adjacent to the main entrance.
The flat, paved trails make the refuge an excellent school field trip destination — interpretive programs are available for groups by advance reservation. Beyond field trips, the refuge is a popular destination for photography groups and organized birding tours, particularly during shorebird migration season in fall and spring.
